He’s Dead, Jim

To quote Dr. McCoy from Star Trek, “He’s dead, Jim.” My washer, that is. Bastard machine. Died full of water and with a king size blanket in it. Hate. Kill. And I have the flu. So. There you have it. The end to another spectacular year. Bailing the washer and moldy blanket in the sink. Merry F’in Christmas everybody. Or Happy Hanukkah. Whatever.

They always die full of water it’s in their nature. Sorry you have the flu, get better soon.

  2. Ugh! No fun at the best of times, but even worse when you’re sick. Get well soon!

Fortunately I was able to repair our washing machine when it died last month:

Very cool that you repaired it. I got on the internet, and investigated what could be the problem with mine. So, I was following the instructions for the repair and it suddenly started working again. I loaded up the wet heavy blanket again and got it through the spin cycle with the only problem being I definitely smelled some sort of electrical burn. I tried a second load – more burn smell, and the washer died again full of water. I waited a while and was able to drain the water, but in the end, I decided to get a newer machine – one that is more energy efficient. I bought this new type top loader wave action. It uses less water and less electricity. Supposedly I can get $125 rebate from PG & E. My first washer I had got 23 years. This one only lasted 11. I’m not impressed. I’m only impressed after 20 years of hard service. I don’t have a lot of clothes but I wash them in an OCD style.

Strange, my washer did the same thing, just stopped working one day — there was the smell of burnt wiring when it died. So we placed a service call and the service guy started the washer and it worked fine. He cleaned up some crap, slapped it back together, and it’s been working fine ever since. By chancewas your washer a Kenmore? Ours is 9 years old, I suspect it will die in a couple of years, but I have to admit most of my washers have died within the first four years, so this one has surprised me because it lasted for 9 years already.

This one is a Kenmore too. That is so weird. Maybe I should have simply called a repairman like you did. It was such a crap shoot. After 11 years, I just expected something major to be wrong with it. Plus, it’s this old style where it uses a lot of water – wastefully too. Bugs me every time I use it. I’m just making excuses now, but I was afraid it was going to cost as much as a new one. We got this one for about $500 with the rebates.

  3. That’s why you wanted to know how to spell (C)Hannukah?!

  4. P.S., Love Star Trek refs. Old, original Star Trek especially since it’s the only one I recognize.

    • “Damnit, Jim! I’m a blogger, not an appliance repairman!”

But I would make an appliance service call for sufficient beer 🙂

This makes me laugh every time I read it. Thanks for the offer, Beer Repairman. The new washer is one way. I will let Home Depot deal the busted one.

  5. I recall a couple of our washers giving up the mechanical ghost. Get well soon.

Happy Holidays to you and the Big Guy and the little dog.
